The ancient capital of Gondor.

Background
From the Tolkien Gateway:

Osgiliath was the old capital city of Gondor. The city straddled the Anduin River at a point approximately half way between the cities of Minas Anor (better known in these modern times as Minas Tirith) to the south-west and Minas Ithil (better known as Minas Morgul in these dark times) to the north-east, and north of the nearby Emyn Arnen.

In the Great Hall of the city the thrones of the sons of Elendil were set side by side. In its days of glory, the city featured quays to handle sea-going vessels that came up from the sea, a great stone bridge supporting houses and towers of stone, and the Dome of Stars, which housed the Osgiliath-stone, the greatest of the seven Palantíri.

Outline
The astute amongst you will realise we already have an Osgiliath, released in 2014. However, this does not live up to standards or the vision we have for the city today. As such, we’ve taken the decision to build this location anew. Others will remember participating in the early 2020 attempt to rebuild the city from scratch, before it was put on hold until today. It is a terrain-light and structure-heavy build, so will require maximum Member participation.

Plan

Following thorough discussion with the community Lead team, it has been decided that the best way to build Osgiliath is to build exteriors/structures only, but preferably include an interior structure as-well. The reason behind this decision is so that we can make a ruined version first, clean and quickly without having to spend time and nerves decorating every little room in the houses. After the structures are done, we will duplicate the map and ruin one of them. The other one might get at-least a minimal interior attention, like focusing on the decoration of more important buildings or sealing off certain rooms.
No interiors allows a much easier way to make a ruined version of Osgiliath.

Here is a general plan for the next few weeks:

image

District 1 is an affluent middle-class district. District 2 and 4 are simple middle-class districts, they are a bit poorer and their houses are hence more modest. District 3 is the working class district, with the A area being reserved for residency, and the B area mainly reserved for storage and warehouses.

CURRENT INSTRUCTIONS:
Check out the job list (/jobs list) in-game to see what tasks are available. We are now doing the District 3.a. It is a poor district that has a build style which ressembles the movies a lot more than the District 1. I made a thorough tutorial for both the stylistic aspect and philosophical aspect of this district, which is available at /warp Osgitut3. Make sure to check it out before working on the third district jobs! For any ideas, suggestions feel free to reply in this forum thread down below, or discord. If you are motivated to affect Osgiliath even more than this, feel free to message LimeeFox so we can talk about it!

!!! BEFORE STARTING TO BUILD !!!:
Please, go to

/warp OsgiTut3

and carefully read the signs that indicate how to build Osgiliath houses. It is very helpful and a must-do before building a house. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the Projects channel on discord.

Last, but not least, when claiming a job using the jobs plugin, you must copy/paste the area of your job and build on a copy of it floating above the job. After the job is done, it will be reviewed and if everything is alright, it will be pasted down below!

EXTERIOR HOUSE BUILDING
There are three houses that need building, please go to /warp Osgiliath-example and notify me which house you intend to work on. Right now the houses are just outlines in concrete.

You can see the style you need to build in below the warp on the example street. I am aware that I have not yet produced a full build guide for the Osgiliath house style, but I am going to rely on your immense capabilities and capacity to follow a set style for these 3 houses.

If you need any advice, talk to me or @the_pharaohs_cat - though be aware he is quite busy. The wall texture is 90% stone brick, 10% cracked stone brick.

INTERIOR DECORATION
Numerous houses in the example street need interior decorating. Head over to the warp mentioned above, and go below to the houses marked with the yellow INT block. If you need some help or advice, talk to @BorinSwordbane who is leading interiors on this project.

FINAL NOTE: You must and I repeat must use the Resource Pack linked above in the header of this thread. I cannot stress how imperative this is.

TL;DR: This is for planning, I don’t expect every Member to have a read of this. But you can do so if you wish - it’s where I’ll direct you if you ask awkward questions.

EXAMPLE AREA

This is where we’re building right now and is being done to work in the style, iron out kinks, etc etc. Obviously not all of Osgiliath will be built in this exact style, but it is a good place to work out general motifs.

Note: By “area” I am talking in general terms, when I use “district” I’m talking quite specifically about an area of the city which is defined in a certain way - I’ll be using this terminology as we go on. Districts are simply subdivided into streets, but we don’t really have either yet!

Imgur
Key: Unbuilt | Structure in Progress | Interior Required | Approved

The main street of this area goes east-west across the screen, curving slightly. It’s a Middle-Class Merchant Craft street, meaning it comprises comparatively grand buildings, with generally high-skill/low manual labour shops (apothecaries, higher-end cobblers/cordwainers/tailors, chandlers, and general merchant commerce shops. This sort of street would not include stuff like butchers, bakers, etc. Obviously there would be Middle-Class butchers and bakers, just not on this specific street. Butchery especially was a grim profession and you wouldn’t want such an occupation here. Here we would also find Guildhalls for Merchants and higher-end Crafts. Above all these shops would live the people who run them.

The street one below this main street (going east-west above the bottom of the screen) is a Middle-Class Lower-End Housing street. The houses here will be much smaller, but they are still Middle-Class by virtue of their setting - right next to a Merchant street as well as a palatial building. @the_pharaohs_cat will have to help work out an alteration to the style to fit with these smaller houses.

That effectively covers everything I’ve noted on this screen. I will work with the Project Leadership on some more definitions and properly plan out all the districts & their streets once we have fully completed the Example Area, but other street designations will include (but are not limited to:)

Middle Class:
Merchant Craft (customer-facing)
Workshop Craft (need a workshop)
Market & Grocery
Lower-End Housing
Higher-End Housing

And similar for lower-classes. Upper class areas would just include housing. I will make a full list of professions at a later date.

Update
07.03.20

@Designer @Artist @Builder

  • The area we are building in has expanded, and now comprises all laid out houses west of the district border (red line). You may build any houses here west of the red line.
  • I recommend new builders build straight houses (i.e: laid out along the block grid) rather than diagonal ones, to work out the style.
  • The best street to get a feeling of the style from is the west/east street with the guildhall on it (big towered building).
  • Remember, copy the house outline into the sky and build the house there - do not build it on the floor in-situ.

Preliminary guide released! This isn’t an exhaustive style guide, but just some simple DOS and DON’TS to keep you unconfused!

@the_pharaohs_cat has released a video to go with the above post, explaining how to build perfect exteriors.

Here is an updated map of the first quarter of the city we are doing:

As Osgiliath is paused, I’ll move this to the Archive section until it’s re-opened.

I’ve updated the main post and am excited to announce the resuming of Osgiliath!

If you’re a builder and lack permission to build at /warp Osgiliath, please let me know on Discord or down below by replying to this forum thread.

!!! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE MAIN POST ^^^ !!!

It contains very important instructions about the building process that you must know!

(the main thread has also been updated, worry not).

I am excited to announce the opening of the District 3.a jobs! This poorer district is a mix between small numenorian houses and warehouses, especially closer to the riverbank.

BEFORE STARTING TO BUILD please go to ‘/warp Osgitut3’ and go through the tutorial that teaches you how to build houses in this area, both technically and philosophically. In fact it includes a guide on things you should consider and keep in mind when building a house on Osgiliath.

That being said, as usual, when you want to build a house, please do it on a copy of the build area above.

Cheers!
